What the error means
Since Minecraft 1.16, dimensions and world generation are data. When the server opens a world, it reads the world's list of dimensions against the data loaded right now: vanilla, every mod's data, and world/datapacks/. If nothing in that set defines the overworld, it stops with java.lang.IllegalStateException: Overworld settings missing.
It often appears together with Failed to load datapacks, can't proceed with server load, because the dimension list is read while data loads. The Overworld settings missing line is the specific cause to fix.
The usual causes
- A biome, terrain or dimension mod that defines the overworld's generator was removed, disabled, or failed to load.
- A datapack that supplies world-generation data was removed from world/datapacks/ or disabled.
- The modpack ships this way: its world-generation setup is broken for the mods it includes.
Warning
Wiping the world rarely helps. The missing definition is in the loaded mods and data packs, not on disk, so a fresh world fails the same way until that set is corrected.
How to fix it
- Back up the world folder before changing anything.
- List what changed since the world last loaded: a mod removed or updated, a modpack update or swap, a datapack removed.
- If a biome, terrain or dimension mod was removed, put it back at the version the world was created with.
- If a world-generation datapack was removed, put it back in world/datapacks/.
- If the modpack fails this way on a clean first install, its world-generation setup is broken; report it to the pack author with the log.
- As a last resort, start a fresh world. Rename the old world folder instead of deleting it.
The general Failed to load datapacks line has other causes too, such as one recipe or quest pointing at a missing item.
Read the Failed to load datapacks guideWhat MineXHost's launcher does with this crash
MineXEngine treats this crash as a world-generation data problem, not as a corrupt world, and it never wipes the world for it. It first puts back anything it set aside itself, such as a datapack moved into its holding folder, and tries again.
If there is nothing of its own to put back, it stops and tells you the pack's world-generation setup is broken, instead of restarting into the same failure. It does not download or reinstall a world-generation mod you removed, and it does not edit the world.
MineXHost runs Forge, NeoForge and Fabric packs on MineXEngine. Our launcher detects the modpack, picks the right Minecraft loader and Java version, tunes the JVM for your RAM, and auto-recovers from the crashes that normally end a modded server's evening. Pick your RAM, paste the pack, and play.

What causes “IllegalStateException: Overworld settings missing”?
IllegalStateException: Overworld settings missing means the server read the world's dimension list against the currently loaded mods and data packs and found no definition for the overworld, which most often happens after a world-generation mod or datapack was removed, disabled or failed to load. Restoring that mod or datapack usually fixes it.
Is my world corrupted if I see “Overworld settings missing”?
A world that shows Overworld settings missing is usually not corrupted, because the overworld's generator settings come from the mods and data packs loaded at start-up rather than only from the world files, so the same world normally loads again once the missing mod or datapack is back. Back up the world folder before trying fixes.
Will deleting the world fix “Overworld settings missing”?
Deleting the world often does not fix Overworld settings missing, because the missing overworld definition sits in the loaded mod and datapack set rather than on disk, so a fresh world fails the same way until that set is corrected. Fix the mod list first, and keep the old world folder instead of deleting it.
Why does it appear together with “Failed to load datapacks”?
Overworld settings missing and Failed to load datapacks often appear together because dimensions and world generation have been loaded as data since Minecraft 1.16, so a missing overworld definition is reported during data loading and the server also prints its general datapack failure line. Fix the Overworld settings missing cause.
