Your server address, subdomains and custom domains

Last updated

Java players can join your server with a free subdomain such as yourname.minexhost.com, or with the server's IP address and port. Your server's Subdomain page shows exactly what to share, including whether players need to add the port. Bedrock players always use the IP address and port. Custom domains (your own domain name) are not supported yet.

Ways to connect

  • Subdomain (Java only): players type your subdomain in the server address box. Depending on how our DNS is set up at the time, that is the name alone or the name, a colon and your server's port. The Subdomain page tells you which.
  • IP address and port: players type the IP address, a colon, then your server's port. This always works while the server is running. Both are shown at the top of your server's page.
  • Dedicated IP: with the Dedicated IP add-on, players use that IP on the default port (25565 for Java), so there is no port to type. See The Dedicated IP add-on.

Choose a subdomain at checkout

At checkout, the Your address field ends in a fixed .minexhost.com. Type the name you want in front of it, or leave it blank and a unique name is picked for you. The text under the field says whether players will also need the server's port.

Claim or change a subdomain later

  1. Open your server, then choose Network and Subdomain.
  2. Under Claim a name, type the name you want, or press Suggest a name.
  3. Press Claim.

The rule is: "Use 3 to 32 lowercase letters, numbers or hyphens (no leading or trailing hyphen)." If you see That name is reserved. Pick another. or That name is already taken., try a different name.

Each server can have one subdomain. To change it, release the current one first. Because it is your main address, the panel asks Release your main address? and you confirm with Release main address. A released name goes back to the public pool, so anyone can claim it, and players using it can no longer reach your server. Then claim the new name.

Name only, or name and port?

The Subdomain page always shows the address to share. If it says Java players can join with the name alone, no port is needed. If it says players need the name and this server's port, give them the name, a colon and the port, for example yourname.minexhost.com:25570, using your own port.

If your server has a Dedicated IP, share the IP itself. The subdomain only reaches a Dedicated IP server when the Subdomain page says Java players can join with the name alone.

Bedrock servers

Bedrock servers don't get a subdomain, because the Bedrock game can't route a connection by name. Players enter the IP address and then the port in the separate Port box. See Bedrock Edition servers and crossplay.

Custom domains

MineXHost doesn't support custom domains yet, such as play.example.com on a domain you own. The panel can't set one up, and we can't promise that one you set up yourself keeps working. Use your free .minexhost.com subdomain instead.

Good to know

  • One subdomain per server, and up to 10 per account.
  • Subdomains are for Java Edition players.
  • Every subdomain ends in .minexhost.com.
  • If players can't connect, include the server name and the exact address they typed in your ticket.
