How to add a datapack to your Minecraft server

Last updated

Open your server, choose Software and Datapacks, search Modrinth and click Install. The panel picks the version made for your server's Minecraft version and puts it in your world's datapacks folder. Restart the server to load it. Datapacks work on every Java Edition server: Vanilla, Paper and modded.

Install a datapack from Modrinth

  1. Open your server, then choose Software and Datapacks.
  2. Under Browse Modrinth, type in Search datapacks and click Search. The sort menu next to it changes the order of the results.
  3. Leave Only datapacks for Minecraft ticked (it shows your server's version) so the list only shows packs that support your server.
  4. Click Install on the datapack, then confirm.
  5. The file appears under In your world. Restart the server to load it.

The panel downloads the file straight from the author's Modrinth release. If the datapack has no version for your server's Minecraft version, the panel tells you and doesn't install anything.

Worldgen datapacks

Packs marked Worldgen change how new terrain generates. They only affect chunks generated after you install them; areas players have already explored stay as they are. To see the new terrain everywhere, install the pack before you create a world, or explore new areas.

Install a datapack by hand

For a datapack that isn't on Modrinth, or a .zip you already have:

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open Files & Data, then File Manager.
  3. Open your world folder (usually world; the In your world box on the Datapacks page shows the exact path), then the datapacks folder. If there is no datapacks folder, create one with New folder.
  4. Click Upload and choose the datapack's .zip. Upload it as it is; don't extract it.
  5. Start the server.

To check which datapacks are active, run datapack list in the console.

Remove a datapack

Delete the datapack's file from the world's datapacks folder in the File Manager, then restart the server. Removing a worldgen pack doesn't change terrain that has already generated.

Good to know

  • Datapacks are a Java Edition feature, so Bedrock servers don't show the Datapacks page. Bedrock uses behavior packs instead, through Add-ons (Bedrock).
  • If the panel says it doesn't know your server's Minecraft version yet, start the server once, then install the datapack.
  • Datapacks installed from the panel can be up to 100 MB.
  • If a datapack with the same file name is already in the folder, the panel won't install it again.
  • Subusers need the Edit / upload files permission to install datapacks.
  • To change the world itself, see How to upload or download a world. For mods and plugins, see How to add or remove a mod or plugin.
