How do I reactivate a suspended server?

Last updated

If a renewal payment failed and your server is still running, pay it with Pay now on the Subscriptions page. If the server is already suspended, start a new subscription for it on the Billing page. Suspension deletes nothing, so your world, files and backups are still there when it comes back.

Why a server gets suspended

  • A renewal payment failed and wasn't paid within 3 days of the renewal date.
  • You cancelled the subscription and the period you'd paid for has ended.
  • We suspended it for another reason, such as a chargeback or a breach of our Terms. Contact support; the steps below don't apply.

For a failed payment or a cancellation, the subscription ends and the server is stopped. You get an email saying the server has been suspended and that nothing has been deleted, plus a notification in the panel. On your Servers list the server shows as suspended, and its console and power buttons are unavailable.

Before suspension: pay the missed renewal

During the 3 days after a failed renewal, the server keeps running and the subscription shows Payment due.

  1. Go to Billing (/account/billing). Under Payment methods, Replace your card, or add a new one and click Make default.
  2. Open Subscriptions, choose the server, and click Pay now.

The subscription goes back to active straight away. Saving a new card on its own doesn't retry the payment, so don't skip step 2. See How billing works.

After suspension: start a new subscription

  1. Make sure a working card is on file: on Billing (/account/billing), check the card under Payment methods shows Default. Add or replace it if needed.
  2. On the same page, under Subscription, find the server. It's listed with No subscription.
  3. Click Start subscription, pick the same plan the server had before (the list starts on the first plan, and the server gets the memory of the plan you pick), then click Start subscription again.
  4. Open the server and press Start. The suspension is lifted at once, but the server doesn't start by itself.

Starting the subscription charges the first 30 days to your default card right away: the plan you chose, plus the add-ons the server was bought with (a Dedicated IP or extra storage), plus any tax. A new 30-day period starts that day. A discount code from your original order isn't carried over. If the card is declined, nothing changes and the server stays suspended.

The notifications Your server is paused and Your subscription has ended link straight to the Billing page. You can also reach it from the Billing link on the Payment Methods tab of your account.

Good to know

  • On the Subscriptions page, an ended subscription can't be changed or restarted. Use Billing instead. You don't need to order a new server.
  • The Pay & resume button on a suspended server opens Payment Methods, which only shows your card. To bring the server back, follow the steps above on Billing.
  • If the server had a Dedicated IP, that address went back to the pool when the server was suspended, and a new subscription doesn't assign one again automatically. The new subscription still includes the Dedicated IP price from your original order, so open a ticket after you reactivate and mention the Dedicated IP, so staff can look at both the address and the charge.
  • If you paid for the server on Stripe's checkout page, starting a new subscription from the panel isn't available yet. Open a ticket and we'll do it for you.
  • Haven't reached the end of a cancelled period yet? Click Resume subscription instead. See Cancel your subscription.
  • A server refunded under the 3-day money-back guarantee is deleted, so it can't be reactivated.

How long a suspended server is kept

Suspension stops the server but deletes nothing: its world, files and backups are kept until the server is restored or removed (section 9.3 of our Terms of Service). If a server is removed, it is held in a recycle bin for 30 days and can be restored on request during that time; after that it is permanently destroyed (section 9.4). If you want your own copy of the world, download a backup before your paid period ends. See Backups and restore.
